Before beginning to write your essay make sure that you have taken the time to understand the topic and the purpose of the assignment - UNDERSTAND THE PROMPT. Make sure you identify who your audience is and keep them in mind at all times. After doing this, start organizing your ideas. You may want to develop a mind map or simply "free write" - do what works for you. Mapping your ideas will help you avoid mere plot summary as you work to prove your point to the your reader.

Now that you have in mind what your essay is going to say, begin organizing your thoughts into separate sections. Do not talk about a novel in chronological order. Develop the main idea in each paragraph and use appropriate supporting details. Make sure that you maintain a consistent point of view throughout the essay. Also, decide if you are going to write in past or present tense. If you are writing about a piece of literature write in the present tense.

Once you have written your essay, please remember to take the time to revise your work. Revision is one of the most crucial steps in the writing process.
